Every year, Anglia Ruskin and the Cambridge School of Art hold a Degree Show that represents the culmination of three years of study showcasing their best work. Over 200 graduating artists display their talents to the public as they prepare to enter the world of work.
The task is to design a coherent and consistent visual identity across all of the publicity materials for the Degree Show, the Fashion Show and the Arts Picturehouse screening that ties a wide range of work in, together.
The aim of the project is to grab people’s attention by creating visually striking graphics combined with a lot of negative space to spread the word about the show all across the city. This is achieved by creating an effective and consistent set of promotional materials across print and social media platforms.
With this being said, a fellow course mate and I were chosen to design this year's Degree Show. After numerous presentations and meetings with course tutors and students, we all agreed on a Degree Show theme that is the most effective as a concept.
The word ‘Unfold’ can be interpreted in so many different ways. The term Unfold for us, means evolving from an amateur to a professional. It also represents the day we unfold and showcase our true potential as artists and creatives.
The Unfold graphic is a key part of the identity. So, it was essential to create a typeface which could potentially be used to create other assets to expand the brand. The UNFOLD Typeface is an Illustrated typeface that was specifically created and used for the Cambridge School of Art Degree Show 2019. The inspiration for the typeface comes from the unfolding/evolving theme of the Degree Show.
Different materials were designed using the same theme, such as posters, brochures, leaflets, physical and digital invitations, banners, social media assets, way-finding, signage, accessories and a brand book that shows how to use the UNFOLD identity with confidence and clarity.
